What I’m about to say is extremely politically incorrect…

…so feel free to skip it. I just read this article in the New York Times. It’s hard not to have mixed feelings about the deaths of people attending a dogfighting festival in Afghanistan. Dogfighting was illegal when the Taliban was in power, but is legal now. I guess the Taliban did one thing right.

  1. I feel torn on the subject as well. Though undoubtedly what brought some of those people out wasn’t so much the dog-fighting but the business they wanted to make having all those people gathered there. It’s just so wrong, on so many levels. A person doesn’t know what to think or feel.

  2. While I agree that dogfighting is terrible, I also think that human death is categorically wrong and tragic. It is true that some deaths are more tragic than others, but I don’t think that people watching a dogfighting event are on the other side of that line.

  3. Ahem… that is to say that VIOLENT human death is categorically tragic, and violent human death that is perpetrated by other humans is categorically wrong… The flu has apparently fiddled with my thinking circuits :D

  4. I absolutely abhore dogfighting. Period. Interesing article Rhi.

  5. Well since my son-in-law was shot by a Taliban sniper on the boarder of Pakistan/Afganistan on Februry 19, 2007 I can’t say they did a single thing right.

Dog fighting… you mean like in the wild. More meat for dinner.
